Essar Group is investing about $18 billion in the U.S., including a $15 billion steel plant in Iowa and expansion of its Minnesota iron-ore mine. The project aims to begin production in 2030 and eventually produce 10 million tons of steel annually.

Key Highlights

Essar Group is planning an approximately $18 billion investment in the United States, centered on a $15 billion steel plant in Lee County, Iowa, and the expansion of its integrated iron-ore operations in Minnesota. The project, being developed through U.S. subsidiary Mesabi Metallics, is expected to create thousands of jobs and establish a domestic mine-to-steel supply chain.

The Iowa facility is planned to begin steel production in 2030, with an initial capacity of about 7.5 million tons per year and a potential full capacity of approximately 10 million tons annually. Iron ore from Mesabi Metallics’ mine near Nashwauk, Minnesota, is intended to supply the Iowa steelmaking operation, creating an integrated production network from mining to finished steel.

The project is expected to create around 1,750 permanent jobs in Iowa, alongside thousands of construction positions, while the Minnesota mining operation is expected to support approximately 350 jobs. Essar has already invested billions of dollars in its Minnesota operations, which form a key part of the planned U.S. steel supply chain.

The announcement marks a major expansion of Essar’s presence in the American steel industry and revives a long-running effort to develop an integrated mining and steelmaking business in the United States. The project is also part of the broader push to expand domestic manufacturing and steel production in America.
